The George Hotel in Chollerford is a perfect retreat for leisure travellers, and a property we consider to be one of the most relaxing hotels in Northumbria. It is superbly located just 20 minutes from Newcastle International Airport, and just 30 minutes from the centre of Newcastle.
With 50 bedrooms over two floors, the hotel is a historic building dating back to the 1700s. It is set in a beautiful location by the North Tyne river, just five miles from the market town of Hexham. Game fishing is extremely popular on this stretch of the river, with permits available at the hotel. Northumberland National Park is situated just five miles to the west.
The hotel is also superbly equipped with leisure facilities. Our leisure club includes a swimming pool, jacuzzi bath, sauna and steam room.
You’ll find the quality of the hotel is amply matched by our staff. Friendly, warm and highly trained, they’ll do everything necessary to ensure your stay at The George is a relaxing and memorable one.

Pleased
4 of us had a 4 night stay & thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Although some of the decor is rather 'tired' in some of the rooms, the hotel in general is very good. The staff were fantastic, from reception to the dining room, we couldn't find fault with their attitude. The pool, sauna, steam room & Jacuzzi were brilliant features. The only negative we could think of was the spoiling of the beef pie & roast beef dinners being served with a Bolognese type sauce instead of gravy ? Very strange !!!!!

A bit of a hidden gem
We enjoyed a super 4 night break and found it to be an excellent base for touring around and about the very attractive small villages. The accommodation was clean, comfortable and very inviting. The food was very much to our liking and we would find it hard to find fault. I guess the only thing I could come up with as a minus, is the creaking floorboards. Although we were not disturbed by it, there really were some mighty creaking’s along the corridors - hardly a complaint though. Quite lovely!

An Enjoyable Stay
Stayed at this hotel for 4 nights. Although the furniture in the room was a bit dated the view from the window of the gardens and river was wonderful. Bathroom was clean with lots of hot water when needed. Food was great with a different menu each night and the staff were very efficient and helpful. Only fault was the TV did not work well.

Picturesque
The accommodation we had was comfortable, with the best bed we`ve ever had at a Shearings hotel. A definite plus. The room was a bit on the tired side but comfortable. We had a lovely view. The bar area was relaxing and the bar staff very friendly, which is nice. The meals were ok, the usual Shearings menu. We enjoyed it. We had problems with where to sit at meal times, there were four of us and we were moved around for two days! Finally we were left at one table. We`d go back, but by car.

Enjoyable stay, excellent value
We have just returned from a 3 night stay at The George and we really enjoyed our time in Northumberland. The Hotel is in a good position for visiting local sites and we found it comfortable and welcoming. Our room was a good size and the beds and bathroom were spotlessly clean. The food on the Table d’hôte menu was pleasant and to our taste. A major strength of The George is its staff who were friendly and efficient, excellent in all respects...We will certainly visit The George again.
